Definition
The movement of goods using two or more transportation modes while the loading unit remains intact between modes.
In practical terms
Intermodal movements commonly combine truck, rail, and ocean segments. Keeping cargo in the same container or trailer reduces direct handling of the goods at each transfer.
Example
A container travels by truck to rail, by rail across the country, and by truck to final delivery.
