Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU)
Definition
A standard capacity measure based on one nominal 20-foot shipping container.
In practical terms
TEU allows vessel and terminal capacity to be compared across container sizes. A nominal 40-foot container is generally counted as two TEU.
Example
A vessel capacity of 10,000 TEU represents the equivalent of ten thousand 20-foot containers.
