Ocean Freight

Full Container Load (FCL)

Definition

An ocean shipment using a container assigned to one shipper or shipment, whether or not every cubic unit is occupied.

In practical terms

Full container load provides dedicated container use and fewer cargo consolidation handoffs. The shipper still needs to plan weight distribution, securement, and container capacity.

Example

A manufacturer loads enough furniture to use one dedicated 40-foot container.
